Supernatant Returns to Denmark in Spring

Supernatant is pleased to announced that we will be returning to the splendid surroundings of the Kulturvaerftet in Helsingør, Denmark for a 3rd time to further explore technology-driven culture with biophysical interfaces, mathematically-inspired approaches to rhythm composition and 21st Century perspectives on professional and artistic development.

Sessions with Marco Donnarumma, Rob Tubb and Wassim Alsindi will take place in mid-May and are made possible by the support of Sound21, KODA and DJBFA.

Supernatant partners in University course in musical interface design hosted at Norbergfestival 2015

This summer in conjunction with Supernatant Laboratories’ roving workshop programmes, Norbergfestival will host a summer school arranged by three Nordic higher education partners – Mälardalens högskola in Sweden, Aarhus University in Denmark and Aalto University in Finland. Together we will pilot an intense multidisciplinary summer course in musical interface design set in Västerås and on site at Norbergfestival 2015 in late July and the start of August.

Supernatant Workshops @ Norbergfestival later this month!

We’re happy to announce that the Norbergfestival workshop programme in conjunction with Supernatant Laboratories is now online!

This year the festival will host a variety of session types: Phantom Chips will lead a session combining synth-building with textiles and fabrics which anyone can take part in; Mälardalen University brings a team of musicians and technologists exploring responsiveness and interaction; The Human Comparator discusses the trials, tribulations and everyday realities of being an independent synth-maker; Veqtor shows off his latest research into advanced audiovisual systems and missaw chairs a panel on the subject of Music in the Internet Age.

Felix’s Machines joins Supernatant

We are very happy to announce that the acclaimed kinetic installation Felix’s Machines has joined Supernatant.

Felix Thorn builds machines for art installations, live performance, commercials, theatre accompaniment, and shop window displays. Felix specialises in de-constructing real-life objects and creating new experiences with movement, music and light.

Felix’s Machines were initially conceived in an experiment aiming to facilitate live music by transforming sound into a three-dimensional visual show. As an ongoing project, the music-performing machines built by Felix do not intend to match human potential. Instead they exist to test the advantages of mechanical instruments alone.

Having been installed in diverse environments such as galleries, universities, festivals and nightclubs worldwide the configuration of instruments can be adapted to take advantage of their surroundings.

Spring Update: Wassim Alsindi speaks at UWE & Supernatant @ Norbergfestival 2014

Here’s a small update on our activities in the forthcoming months.

Firstly, Supernatant’s founder Wassim Alsindi will be giving a talk to the Music Technology cohort at the University of the West of England’s Computer Science department on March 26th. This talk will focus on the impact of disruptive technologies on creativity.

Secondly, Supernatant is now able to officially announce a collaboration with Sweden’s Norbergfestival. Now entering it’s 15th year, Norbergfestival represents the vanguard of Nordic experimental arts and we are delighted to be coordinating the workshop programme, as well as there being a significant presence of artists from The Centrifuge Agency for the third year running. Stay tuned for further information!

Supernatant 2014 Programme Planning Underway

We are working hard on our forthcoming programme of workshops, seminars, discussions and performances for the next 12 months. Watch out for announcements when everything’s in place, but so far Supernatant is scheduled to head to Bristol, London, Glasgow, Sheffield, Huddersfield, the USA, Canada, Denmark and Sweden.

We will also have further roster additions to add to these recently announced.

Several Additions to Supernatant’s Roster

We are pleased to announce several additions to our workshop and seminar series’ roster. Mark Fell leads a workshop delving deep into his custom Max/MSP patches, Goodiepal discusses and demonstrates the futility of post-modern music and Marco Donnarumma explores biophysical feedback devices.

UK Pilot Scheme Complete // Supernatant Panel Discussion in Philadelphia PA this weekend

Following our extremely well-received UK pilot scheme in early 2013, we wanted to say thanks for your support, attendance and feedback! We’re working hard to expand our programme and scale up the events, and strengthen the community framework that brings together creatives working in different fields and locations. A fresh wave of Supernatant happenings are in the planning stages with sessions around the UK and Europe pencilled in. Stay tuned for further updates!

In the meantime, next up is a Supernatant “Music In The Internet Age” panel discussion chaired by Wassim Alsindi and joined by Gerd Janson, Justin Gibbon, John Schenk and Thomas Schreiber. It’s free to attend on Saturday 4th May from 8pm at The Boom Room in Philadelphia PA (USA). Following the panel will be a very intimate party. Do come if you can!
